Droylsden condemn 'ludicrous' FA Cup expulsion

Football Clubs News

Droylsden are set to contest the FA's decision that they be thrown out of the FA Cup for fielding an ineligible player during their 2-1 win over Chesterfield in a replayed second round tie.

The 'ineligible' player in question, defender Sean Newton, scored both Droylsden's goals in the controversial clash, but they could count for nothing as five bookings collected prior to the clash mean that he shouldn't have been on the field.

His manager Dave Pace claims that the selection of Newton was no more than "an administration error" and they thought that the defender's suspension had been served when the original replay was abandoned due to floodlight failure.

Pace said: "He is not a ringer and he has been registered for two years. It is ludicrous as we have beaten Chesterfield fair and square on the field."

According to the Daily Mail, Pace has threatened to quit unless the club are reinstated in the competition - something which would be quite a blow as he is also chairman.
