Barclays announces review of Premier League sponsorship

Football Sponsors/ Sponsorship and Media

Banking giant Barclays confirmed on Thursday (December 19th) that it will be conducting a review into its sponsorship of the Premier League.

The company has sponsored English football's top flight since 2001 and is currently in the second season of a £66 million-per-year, three-year deal.

However, it has announced that it will be looking into all its endorsements next year and Libby Chambers, global retail and commercial banking chief marketing officer, has indicated that the Premier League will be "very much" part of the process.

She said: "There will be a thorough review of our sponsorships to make sure that we are getting a strong return on investment across the board."

The deal is widely viewed as having been beneficial for both parties, but the current turmoil in the financial markets may force Barclays to reassess its merits.

Barclays also sponsors the Scottish Open and Singapore Open golf tournaments, rugby union's Churchill Cup and the Dubai Tennis Championships.
