Blatter and co set to back Team GB football team

Football Leagues/ Association and Governance

The London 2012 Olympics could see Team GB enter a football team for the first time in 52 years if Fifa agrees to allow it at the governing body's next meeting in Tokyo.

It is an idea fraught with controversy, with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all apprehensive about subscribing to a GB Olympic team for fear of losing their right to field an international team in future.

But Fifa president Sepp Blatter wants to see the UK field a side at the London games, according to a report on the BBC.

With Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke reassuring the home nations, there could be cause to expect Fifa to back the proposal.

Things aren't set in stone yet as Uefa may be a different matter following president Michel Platini's comments stating that he understood why the British nations were concerned.

Despite not playing in the Olympic Games for almost half a century, Great Britain is second in the overall medals table in terms of football.

Only Hungary has tasted more success with three golds, a silver and a bronze compared to the UK's three golds.
