MPs support call to re-examine Hume case

Five separate MPs have lent their support to a call for a review of a challenge on Barnsley footballer Iain Hume last month, reports the BBC.

The challenge was perpetrated by Chris Morgan, a defender for Sheffield United, and resulted in Hume sustaining a fractured skull.

Morgan only received a yellow card for the incident at the time, but the MPs are levelling pressure on the Football Association (FA) to review the case due to the seriousness of the injury.

The 25 year-old Hume endured surgery during a 24-hour period in intensive care after the challenge.

An investigation carried out by the FA found that there was no evidence that Morgan set out to intentionally hurt his Barnsley opponent and so no further action was taken.

So far, Broxtowe MP Nick Palmer, Barnsley West MP Michael Clapham, Keighley MP Ann Cryer, Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock and Livingston MP Jim Devine have all signed a motion calling for the FA to continue the investigation.

In other news, the Telegraph reports that Norwegian fitness results published in the British Medical Journal online say that a 20-minute warm up substantially cuts injuries experienced by women footballers.
