Uefa, European football's governing body, has agreed media rights for Italy and Spain for a three-year period between 2009 and 2012, reports sportbusiness.com.

The deals centre on the rights to the Uefa Champions League and the Uefa Europa League tournaments.

Italian public broadcaster Rai will show a free-to-air game every Wednesday as well as highlights programmes every Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Sky Italia will show all the games as they happen, in addition to separate highlights programmes.

Both broadcasters also hold rights to use footage on internet and mobile phone platforms.

Spanish broadcaster Telecinco will show free-to-air matches from the Uefa Europa League, as well as highlights programmes to condense the best of the action.

Canal Satellite Digital will also show a selection of games as well as delayed coverage and a highlights show whenever a match is on.

The rights to pan-continental football tournaments are hugely competitive across Europe and form some of the most expensive packages that television broadcasters can buy.

Chelsea made it to the knock-out stages of the Uefa Champions League last night, having beaten CFR Cluj 2-1.
