English and Scottish clubs have received payouts from Uefa for releasing their players to participate in this summer's European Championships, it was confirmed today (December 4th).
Arsenal were the biggest beneficiaries across the two countries, being awarded £732,760 by European football's governing body for the inclusion of players such as Cesc Fabregas, who represented eventual champions Spain.
Meanwhile, Celtic received the highest payout of any Scottish side at £272,989, which compares with the five-figure sums commanded by clubs such as Rangers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Uefa paid out a total of £4.14 million to English sides and £359,196 to Scottish sides, working on the premise of paying each club roughly £3,420 per player, per day - while also incorporating qualifying matches.
The five clubs who earned the most from the tournament are Werder Bremen (£935,107), Lyon (£888,412), Bayern Munich (£870,452), Real Madrid (£822,559) and Barcelona (£816,573).
It is hoped that the payments - which were agreed in principle in January - will bring to an end the perennial dispute between clubs and Fifa and Uefa over compensation for releasing their players.
The other top earners in England were Chelsea (£702,827), Liverpool (£607,641) and Manchester United (£440,614).
