A senior figure at Fifa confirmed yesterday (November 26th) that sales of hospitality packages for the 2010 World Cup are set to comfortably outstrip those of the last tournament in Germany.
Jerome Valcke, the world governing body's general secretary, has explained that South African companies have shown particularly strong interest in securing hospitality deals.
Speaking at the last meeting of the Local Organising Committee board, he revealed that sales have so far totalled £74.7 million - a figure which translates to around 50,000 packages.
He said: "Fifa is extremely pleased to hear that hospitality sales are far surpassing all set targets.
"The sales are going at a much faster pace than for Germany 2006 for the equivalent period ... [and] this is yet another indication of the attractiveness of the Fifa World Cup and it shows the strong confidence of the corporate world in South Africa's capabilities to stage a fantastic World Cup in 2010."
Mr Valcke added that the most popular package to date has been the 'Big Five', worth around £975,000.
At present, Fifa has 208 member associations, which is three more than the International Olympic Committee and 16 more than the United Nations.
