United fans call in OFT over season ticket row

Football Supporters News

Manchester United fans are attempting to enlist the help of a leading government watchdog in relation to pricing arrangements for season ticket holders, reports have revealed today (November 19th).

The club runs an automatic cup ticket (ACT) scheme, whereby supporters are charged for FA Cup and Champions League tickets when renewing their season tickets - regardless of whether they actually want them.

However, the strategy has infuriated huge numbers of fans, to the extent that the Manchester United Supporters Trust now wants the Office of Fair Trading to investigate the situation.

Although some concessions have been made - such as the chance to opt out of Carling Cup games - fans believe that the club may be abusing their market position.

BBC Radio Five Live sports correspondent Gordon Farquhar told BBC News: "They say one issue is they don't know how much the final price of their season tickets will be as that depends how far they will progress in the cup competitions.

"The OFT will now have to decide whether the fans' concerns are worthy of a formal investigation."

A website called dontrenew.co.uk is urging United fans to boycott their season ticket renewals in protest at the system.
