FA battles to save Respect campaign

Football Referees, Players, Managers and Media

The Football Association (FA) is today (November 11th) attempting to salvage the much-discussed Respect campaign.

The initiative, which came into force at the start of the season, aims to encourage improved attitudes and behaviour towards match officials.

However, several high-profile incidents in recent weeks have led to the game's governing body calling for a meeting with the League Managers' Association.

In a statement, Jonathan Hall, director of governance for the FA, said the public criticism of referees seen in recent weeks is "disappointing".

He added: "It is easy to support officials when a decision goes your way, the real test is the ability to show understanding when a call goes against you."

During the last two weeks, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Newcastle interim coach Joe Kinnear and Barnsley boss Simon Davey have all spoken out against decisions from officials.

Earlier this month, the FA revealed free training programmes for those interested in becoming referees.
