Blue Square Premier side Lewes have been put up for sale after reportedly racking up considerable debts, it emerged yesterday (November 5th).
The Sussex club were the surprise of the Blue Square South season last year as they secured promotion but they currently sit bottom of the table 17 games in with just 11 points.
Follow their successful campaign last term, the board controversially decided against offering manager Steve King a new contract and the entire squad (aside from Anthony Barness) were released.
A statement released by the club read: "Although prudent budgets were set, circumstances have led the club to review the position."
A fans' consortium led by Lee Cobb made a bid for the club during the summer which was centred around bringing King back to the Dripping Pan.
However, he has now taken a job with fellow relegation candidates Northwich Victoria and although Cobb claimed that the offer is still on the table, he admitted that the situation has now become much harder.
He said: "The main member is a good friend of Steve. And, in a way, he was doing it to help Steve out.
"We do still have other members who have finances available, but not to the extent that we had before."
Lewes were founded in 1885 and their nickname is the Rooks.
