Another Euro 2012 stadium project hits the rocks in Ukraine

Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine have received another blow in their efforts to prepare for the tournament after an Austrian firm withdrew from a stadium construction project.

Reports on Monday (October 21st) suggested that major company Alpine Bau has pulled out of completing a 30,000-seat stadium in Lyiv due to a disagreement over budgets.

The firm provided a cost sheet which was in excess of the €85 million figure originally agreed with the Euro 2012 department at the city council.

Oleh Zasadny, head of the department, said: "Lviv city council has therefore launched procedures to find a new contractor.

"Talks are under way with companies from Italy, Croatia, Turkey, Germany and Spain and official proposals have been submitted."

The announcement is the second of its kind to date, with the general contractor recently being changed for the renovation of the Luzhniki Stadium in Kiev, which is set to host the final.

It adds to the already considerable concerns about the ability of Ukraine to host the tournament alongside Poland, where government intervention and corruption in football have been rife recently.
