Tragedy struck a Peruvian second division football team on Sunday night when the team bus left the road and fell 200 metres down a ravine.

Eight people were killed and 22 others injured when the San Cayetano de Celendin team bus crashed on the return journey from Tarapoto.

The accident occurred near to the destination of Celendin, after the bus was hijacked by robbers, according to Peruvian state news agency Andina.

Among the dead were three players who were named as Jorge Velasquez Machuca, Robin Medina Vasquez and Lenin Chavez Pereira.

The bus owners, a journalist, a teacher and the former mayor of Celendin were also among the dead.

"This is a very sad moment for all our province," said current mayor Juan de Dios Tello Villanueva.

The team was returning home after losing 10-0 to Santa Rosa de Morales in the Copa Peru, according to RTE Sport.
