Scotland ready to step into Euro 2012 breach

Football Leagues/ Association and Governance

The Scottish Football Association reaffirmed yesterday (October 1st) that it is ready to step up to the challenge of hosting Euro 2012 if Ukraine and Poland are stripped of the championships.

The Polish Football Federation was suspended on Monday after allegations about corruption and its failure to address it, resulting in the appointment of an administrator to take over operations.

However, Uefa and Fifa have refused to acknowledge the development and maintained that the country could have the finals taken away if the government continues to interfere with the federation.

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith said: "Our position is straightforward. If, in the event of it being taken away from Poland and Ukraine, it was opened to bids, then we would seek to establish if a bid from us would be considered by Uefa.

"If the response was positive then we would undertake a feasibility study along with the Scottish government to decide if we would bid."

The corruption reports are the latest blow to the co-hosts, who were last week informed that they run the risk of losing the competition unless they speed up preparations and meet a number of criteria.
