Blackburn chairman tips Premier League bubble to burst

Blackburn chairman John Williams has voiced concerns over the financial stability of the Premier League in the wake of the credit crunch.

Mr Williams believes that fans might ultimately be driven away from football as they are subjected to increasing financial pressures, forcing clubs to adapt and "cut their cloth accordingly".

In a bid to combat this, Blackburn have already ensured that ticket prices are amongst the lowest in the Premier League - but Mr Williams is not convinced that this will be enough.

"The economic situation is a worry for a lot of people. Football is a luxury but the reality is we are competing for that leisure pound," he said in an interview with the Citizen.

"I am sure there will be a breaking point, when it really hits football, and I don't think that will be too far away."

Mr Williams said the corporate hospitality sector would be the first to be hit - with the people on the terraces next in line.

In particular, Mr Williams believes that fewer families will be attending games en masse as they would be prevented from doing so by rising bills.
