New 'serious' cemetery opens for Hamburg football fans

Hamburg have followed in the footsteps of Boca Juniors by opening their own cemetery, it has been revealed.

While Hamburg board member Christian Reichert admitted in an interview with German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung that many people would find it difficult to understand the motive for such a move, he said there was a purpose behind it.

"Many people think it's crazy and a strange idea," he said, the BBC reports.

"But our plan is to capture worldwide attention with a serious venture."

Many fans in England choose to have their ashes spread over their favourite club's turf, but Hamburg are the first club in Europe to open their own cemetery for supporters and the second in the world behind Argentine side Boca.

Hamburg's HSV Arena is visible from the cemetery, and plots can be bought for £1,900 - while it is also possible to secure a special Hamburg urn for £315.

However, space restrictions mean there is only room for a lucky 500 fans - and some of the spots have already been reserved.
