Kenwright: We need a billionaire

Football Finance News

Everton owner Bill Kenwright has claimed that the club needs to find a sugar daddy if it is going to compete with the big guns in the Premier League.

The Toffees endured a frustrating summer as boss David Moyes failed to add significantly to their squad - aside from Stephen Pienaar joining from Dortmund - until the last moments of the transfer window.

On a frantic last day, £15 million was splashed out on Standard Liege's promising midfielder Marouane Fellaini, while Louis Saha, Segundo Castillo, Lars Jacobsen and Carlo Nash were also recruited.

However, Kenwright said: "I'm a pauper when it comes to other chairmen. I want Everton to have a billionaire, but it is not me. My shares have been for sale from the day I bought in.

"Now Arabs have bought Man City, making it even more difficult for Everton. I cannot go on like this, we need a new owner and we will continue to try to find one."

Everton's purse strings have also been tightened as they await progress over their plans to move to a new stadium in Kirkby - a proposal which has been strongly opposed by some fans.
