The Bundesliga is now closing the financial status gap on traditional super-power Serie A, new research has suggested.
The German top division is expected to move even closer to securing its place at the second-richest league in Europe when an anticipated revenue of 1.43 billion for the 2007/08 season is announced.
While the Premier League inevitably tops the standings, those figures would bring the Bundesliga to within just 10 million of Serie A - a major surprise considering the respective standings of both leagues from a global viewpoint.
It has also been suggested that if German clubs outperform their Italian counterparts in this season's Champions League, the Bundesliga will certainly assume second place.
The upturn is being attributed to a number of positive influences on German football, such as player wage control, large match attendances and the successful hosting of the 2006 World Cup.
By contrast, Serie A is still struggling to recover from the 'Calciopoly' scandal, with attendance dropping as fans turning their back on stadia - which are increasingly in need of renovation - while new grounds are few and far between.
