Construction for Liverpool's new stadium in Stanley Park has been delayed with reports suggesting that the credit crunch is affecting the club's ability to raise the funds for the project.
But the stadium, which is set to cost £350 million, could be increased as the club uses the delay to look at plans to enlarge the capacity to 73,000 seats.
"We will use this period productively and progress the proposals for the stadium to increase its capacity to 73,000 seats," a statement said.
"Like many other major development projects in the UK and overseas we are affected by global market conditions."
Plans to increase capacity could affect the planning application although no serious changes have been discussed.
EU grants for the re-generation of the Anfield area have been withdrawn meaning the club's owners lost out on £5 million.
There have also been funding issues over the stadium centre which will provide services to the community.
