Nearly 100 Liverpool fans attended a meeting to discuss a supporter takeover of the club.

ShareLiverpoolFC wants 100,000 fans to pay £5,000 each into a kitty that would be used to bid for control of the club and take it away from Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The plans have been backed by Andy Burnham, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, who believes fans should have a say on how they control their future.

"I think the principle is a good one, that the people who have built up these clubs over the generations and have invested millions of their money should control their future," he explained.

Founding member of ShareLiverpoolFC, Dr Rogan Taylor, believes financial pressure needs to be applied to the club's owners.

There are currently 9,500 fans signed up to the organisation's website and a further 9,000 have registered an interest but cannot afford the £5,000 injection.

A further 9,000 fans want to be kept informed of developments, the BBC reports.
