Scotland have distanced themselves from plans to field a Great Britain Olympic team in the London 2012 Games.

Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister, has rejected the idea by describing it as "ridiculous".

Gordon Brown has been in talks with Fifa in a bid to ensure that the future of individual sides are not jeopardised by a GB team.

But Mr Salmond claims it would sacrifice the future of Scotland's international football, a view that has been backed by some fans.

He told BBC Scotland: "The whole concept's ridiculous and only could be put forward by somebody who's seriously out of touch with Scotland."

Meanwhile, Fifa president Sepp Blatter has also suggested that Britain could announce a team of English players to avoid long discussions between the home nations.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been named as a possible manager for the side, although he has also distanced himself from taking up any role.
