Wrexham's Racecourse has been officially named as the oldest stadium in the world that still hosts international football matches.

Guinness World Records presented a certificate at the Wales v Romania under-21 international game last night (Wednesday) and Wrexham have a fan to thank for the honour.

Glyn Davies wrote to Guinness after spending a couple of months researching the case.

He said there were a couple of other clubs trying to claim the title but was able to show that the Racecourse was the oldest stadium.

"They said I needed to prove that the venue was still being used for internationals, and because there weren't any scheduled I had to write to the Football Association of Wales to ask for their support," he told the BBC.

He said he had received a letter from the Welsh FA, confirming that they planned to play international matches at the ground in the future.

Guinness emailed the club and told them that Mr Davies had made the claim and confirmed the ground's status.

The oldest football ground in the world is also located in the UK and is home to Sheffield Hallam FC.

Sandygate also hosts the oldest derby in the world, when Sheffield FC take on Sheffield Hallam FC every year on Boxing Day.
