Brian Barwick will step down from his position as chief executive at the Football Association (FA) on December 31st after discussions about his role.
According to a statement from the governing body, the decision is based around discussion over "the role of the chief executive within the new FA structure".
Barwick's departure was announced before England's 2-2 friendly draw with the Czech Republic at Wembley last night and he said he was sad to go.
"I have always endeavoured to do my job with passion, decency and integrity, and I believe I am leaving a strong legacy for the future," he said.
Barwick said it was important to have opened Wembley Stadium as well as beginning a structural review and increasing broadcast and commercial contracts.
He reassured fans that Fabio Capello was the right choice as manager and expected future successes under the Italian.
"The England team has the right manager and a genuine chance of success," he said.
Lord Triesman, chairman of the FA, thanked Barwick for his work and the stability he had brought to the organisation.
Capello saw his side put in a disappointing performance as they drew with a last minute goal from Joe Cole.
