Rotherham could start the new season with a 17 point deduction, if they agree to a punishment without the option to challenge.

The Football League has given Rotherham until midday tomorrow (Friday) to accept the ruling in order to start the new season on Saturday.

They must accept the deduction and agree not to challenge it if they are to remain in League Two.

Rotherham's future has been under threat since they went into administration and the club has recently announced that it will play its home games at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium.

But the club could not agree a company voluntary agreement (CVA) with creditors forcing the League to set some rules in the 'exceptional circumstances'.

It also means that the Millers must return to Rotherham within four years and pay unsecured creditors the amount offered at the time of the CVA hearing.

Despite the reduction, Rotherham will not be bottom of the league after Luton Town were deducted 30 points for misconduct and failing to comply with insolvency rules.

Meanwhile, the statement also announced that Bournemouth will be considered under 'exceptional circumstances'.

The Football League will meet today (Thursday) to discuss Bournemouth's future.
