Councillor calls for terraces

Peter Jones, Chiltern district councillor, has called for safe standing areas to be applied to football stadiums and he plans to bring up the notion at the Liberal Democrats' conference next month.

In Germany, fans can buy tickets in standing areas that have safety rails so avoid any crushing and Mr Jones said he would even pay extra to stand, the Metro reported.

Standing at football matches has been a highly contentious issue in English football ever since the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 where 96 supporters were crushed and died.

Terracing was phased out in the two top flights of English football following the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

But recent football research from Football Fans Census revealed that fans want safe-standing areas designed with the latest technology.

A total of 80 per cent said that safe-standing areas would make their matchday experience more enjoyable and over half said it would not affect crowd trouble or spectator safety.
