Alisher Usmanov could increase his stake in Arsenal after reports indicated that he is expected to persuade Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith to sell her shares.

He has already purchased David Dein's 14.6 per cent stake in the club to take his holding up to 24.9 per cent but he would need to reach 30 per cent before a takeover bid could be mounted.

Usmanov is likely to try and persuade Lady Bracewell-Smith that his ownership would make the club strong in the transfer market.

His interest has been backed by Dein who left the club over a year ago after falling out with the board of directors.

Dein is involved with Red & White Holdings, the company being used to launch a possible takeover.

But the move is likely to be unpopular with both the fans and the board who have repeatedly stated that they do not wish to sell.

Despite Arsene Wenger's apparent weakness in the transfer market, Arsenal fans are unlikely to support a bid from Usmanov that would see their club following a similar route to Liverpool and Manchester United.
