Data from digital measuring firm comScore looked into the visitation of the official websites of the Premier League's clubs and found that much of the traffic to the sites of the 'big four' was from abroad.

Manchester United's official site attracted 64 per cent of its visitors from abroad, while Premierleague.com attracted a total of 55 per cent of its audience from outside the UK.

United attracted an average of 912,000 hits per month while Liverpool saw 887,000 visitors, Arsenal 718,000 and Chelsea 402,000.

Jamie Gavin, analyst at comScore, said: "These data suggest that there is a substantial market for Premiership football beyond the confines of the UK."

He said that generating support from outside the UK was a good way to benefit other clubs and raise the profile of the English game to a global level.
