Everton are assessing whether to call an extraordinary general meeting after the club received a petition from shareholders relating to the plans to move to a new stadium in Kirkby.
The club are validating the names on a petition to see whether it is necessary to call the meeting.
Rules of the club's ownership state that an EGM must be called if a petition from 20 per cent of the shareholders is placed.
The petition relates to the proposed stadium development in Kirkby, something that is being hotly debated among fans.
Plans for the stadium are awaiting approval from central government having being backed by the local councils but not all fans are behind the move to the 55,000 seater development.
"The club can confirm that on Friday we did receive a petition from shareholders," said Mark Rowan, head of media and communications.
He said the club would have three weeks from the date that they validate the signatures to the announcement of a date for the EGM.
