Everton face a wait to learn whether their plans for a new stadium in Kirkby will go ahead.

The government could decide whether the project needs further a review, but if it is delayed construction on the 55,000 seater stadium could be postponed.

The controversial plans have been opposed by fans who do not want the club's home to move outside Liverpool.

Shareholders have also lodged a petition against the move and it could lead to an extraordinary general meeting to be called.

But plans for the stadium may hit a snag before the possible meeting if the move is not approved.

Everton are joining up with Tesco over the move and government approval is needed for the plans to go forward.

According to reports from the BBC, the government is ready to confirm a decision before Parliament goes into recess tomorrow (Wednesday), but it may be delayed.

"The decision on the plans is imminent, it should be some time this week. The plans are with the minister now," a government spokesperson told the Press Association.
