A new exhibition at the World Museum in Liverpool will follow the history of football, exploring the classic era, as well as the modern game.
Rare objects from well-known matches, top European trophies and memorabilia will feature in the 'Only a Game?' exhibition.
Michel Platini, the president of Uefa, was delighted to be bringing the exhibition to Liverpool.
He said it was "a city that loves its football and plays such a big role in Europe's fascination with the game".
Success, participation, celebration, racism and integration will all be examined in the exhibition and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said the city was the perfect place to hold the event.
"There is no city in Europe where football means more than it does to the people of Liverpool. So I think it is great that we are having a European football exhibition as part of Liverpool '08," he added.
Many events will be taking place in Liverpool as part of its tenure as the European City of Culture.
The Open golf championship, which is currently taking place at the Royal Birkdale course, is just one of them.
