City fans will go to the game

Bad weather has ruined the travels of 12 Manchester City fans heading to the Faroe Islands to watch their team in Europe.

The fans hired a fishing trawler to take them to the game but after catching a ferry from Aberdeen to the Shetland Islands, they became stranded.

They were due to board 'The Three Sisters' but the 72ft trawler could not brave the rough seas for what would have been a 26-hour crossing.

Speaking to Sky News, Leighton Gobbett, who organised the trip, said it was impossible to go out in 4.5 metre high waves.

They had been due to arrive in time for their side's Uefa Cup qualifying fixture against EB/Streymur.

Instead of making the epic journey, the fans were stranded and could have missed the game which takes place tonight.

However, a Faroes-based airline has agreed to pick them up and take them to the game for free.

Magni Arge, the airline president, told the BBC that it was important to take the fans because it was a great evening for the Faroe Islands.

"This is a great opportunity for us to show there is an airline based in the Faroes which can serve both Shetland and the Faroes Islands and we've got some sponsors to help us make this feasible," he explained.
