Fans attempt to buy Drogba is just a 'message'

The attempts by fans of Olympic Marseille to bring Didier Drogba back to the club have been met with amusement by the club's president.

Pape Diouf said he was "amused" by the news that fans are trying to raise 28 million euros to buy the Chelsea striker, who moved from their club four years ago.

But the fans maintain that the protest was not an attempt to buy Drogba but instead a public message to the club's board.

Fans have set up a website asking for donations with one million euros already raised.

They have said that it would not be possible to sign the forward and the fundraising exercise is purely an attempt to show Diouf what they want.

"I'm surprised and amused. It shows the true passion of our supporters," Diouf told La Provence.

But he also revealed that the club would not be able to afford Drogba's wages, even if they raised the cash for a transfer fee.

"I know what Drogba earns at Chelsea!" he said.
