Football fans have been successful in their bid to keep a football team in Gretna after their club was put into administration and removed from the Scottish Football League (SFL).

Fans formed an action group fearing that there may not be another football team in Gretna after the demise of the former Scottish Premier League (SPL) side.

But Gretna FC 2008 have been given a place in the East of Scotland League as a newly formed club.

Anton Hodge, secretary of the supporter's group that fronted the campaign, told the Daily Record that it was a proud moment for fans.

"Gretna's name will live on and we are delighted to gain entry to the East League," he said.

"We have an agreement to play our home games in Annan, which is ironic because they have filled the SFL vacancy left by Gretna," said Mr Hodge.

The team will play their home fixtures at the Everholm rather than the traditional home of Raydale after a deal was negotiated with the Annandale Eskdale Sports Trust.

They will begin their campaign on August 9th.
