Fifa increase World Cup tickets for fans

Football fans will be able to enjoy the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in greater numbers after Fifa changed the way tickets are distributed.

The governing body said that 12 per cent of the stadium capacity will be given to fans of teams in matches in the first round.

But during the knockout stages only eight per cent of the stadium will be made available to fans.

David Will, a Fifa official, was confident that a minimum of 80 per cent of tickets would reach the general public.

He hoped the scheme would let more fans into the stadium and stop tickets ending up on the black market.

"We have always been criticised for too many tickets going to the fat cats but we are confident that at least 80 percent in 2010 will go to the general public," he explained.

Mr Will said that Fifa had tried to simplify the laws by introducing a new way for fans to collect their match tickets.

He said it worked in the same way as buying a movie ticket over the phone or on the internet.

"When you get there you access your ticket through an ATM-type machine," Mr Will said.
