The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has begun to ask fans if they are prepared to pay increased ticket prices to bring sides such as Argentina to Hampden Park.
A match between the South American giants and Scotland has been scheduled for November but discussions surrounding the financing of the fixture are still underway.
Argentina are known to charge a substantial fee for friendly matches and this could be passed onto fans in the form of increased ticket prices.
Gordon Smith, chief executive of the SFA, said that fans will need to be enthusiastic for the match to go ahead.
He said that Scotland needed to play bigger sides in order to prepare for major tournaments and qualifying groups.
"We will always strive to keep ticket prices down, but if we want to play the very best, then there will be an impact on ticket prices."
Mr Smith said prices for the game could leap frog that of a normal competitive fixture.
"Today we are starting a debate. We want the fans and the media to talk about this issue frankly and openly," he explained.
Fans can have their say by emailing the SFA.
