Football fans not prepared to veto five-a-side

While the credit crunch is causing consumers to cut back on unnecessary spending, football fans will not give up their weekly five-a-side budget.

Goals Soccer Centres, a popular haunt of many football fans across the country, believes that few people are willing to cancel their weekly fee of about £5 to play.

Bill Gow, director of the firm, told the Daily Telegraph that fans were becoming even more attracted to playing because it is a way to see their friends and forget about their problems.

"What we offer is extremely low cost per head and players of team sports are not willing to let down their mates, so we are not worrying about the downturn," he explained.

The firm is offering an increasing number of fans a chance to play with its plans to open new centres.

It currently boasts 31 centres across the country and plans to open three more in the second half of the year.

England's absence from Euro 2008 has also got fans playing, rather than watching, the beautiful game.

According to Mr Gow, fans were less willing to forfeit their weekly fixture to watch the football as England were not competing.
