Southend United have been given the go-ahead for a new 22,000 seater stadium that will be ready for the beginning of the 2010 season.

The stadium, which will be built at Fossetts Farm, was given the go-ahead after the club agreed a deal for land near the Boots and Laces training ground which is owned by Southend Estates.

Chairman of the Shrimpers Ron Martin told the Essex Echo that he was delighted with the news.

"You can never be sure with planning applications. It is grand to get the final approval to allow the club to progress with the stadium," he said.

"I am also pleased for our thousands of fans who have had to wait for what has been a long and sometimes tedious process to be concluded," he added.

Mr Martin believes fans will now be able to enjoy the standards expected throughout the rest of League One and he said everyone involved with the club was celebrating.
