Motson retirement pleases Scottish fans

Scottish football fans are delighted that John Motson has decided to hang up his microphone and sheepskin coat, the Times reports.

The Association of Tartan Army Clubs organised a farewell party in a Sports Café in Glasgow after enduring years of references to England's World Cup winning victory in 1966.

Hamish Husband, a spokesman for the organisation, said that the fans would be "booing" the commentator after years of driving the Tartan Army mad.

"Although John Motson is retiring, I fear that phrase will not retire with him," he explained.

Fans were reported to be tuning into radio commentary to avoid listening to Motson and his co-commentator Mark Lawrenson.

The criticism is nothing new, as during the 2006 World Cup, several fans posted messages on the BBC website complaining about the commentary of Motson and others.

Hearing about the event, Motson wished the Scottish fans well.

"I hope the Tartan Army have a really great time, I hope they raise a glass to me and hopefully they won't be too critical," he said.
