Poland and Ukraine will be told in September whether they have the ability to host the 2012 European Championships.

Uefa called for the potential hosts to improve work on stadiums and local infrastructure and president Michel Platini will lead an inspection next week, the BBC reports.

But Platini insisted there was no back-up plan should the inspection turn up unwanted results.

"We'll do everything we can to hold it in Poland and Ukraine," he explained.

"The only thing which would make me decide not to go is if there is no stadiums in the capitals, Warsaw and Kiev. If there are no stadiums there, no tournament," he added.

Italy has been rumoured to be a potential back-up option for Uefa should the bid from Poland and Ukraine fall through.

The vote was announced in Cardiff in April last year with Poland and Ukraine a surprise victor.

The governing body also revealed that it would increase the number of teams taking part in the tournament to 24.
