Premier League clubs set to clash with Uefa

The relationship between Uefa president Michel Platini and England's top clubs has taken a further blow after it emerged that Uefa have submitted proposals for the future regulation of football.

European football's governing body hopes to use the French presidency of the European Union to implement several new rules.

According to reports from the Daily Telegraph, the new rules will force English teams to conform to strict player nationality quotas.

New rules could also govern how players are transferred, as well as the ownership of clubs and how they are financially run.

But English clubs are likely to see the news as another attempt by Platini to exert control and reduce their financial power.

According to reports, Premier League teams are becoming increasingly concerned and have enlisted the help of Gordon Brown to fight their corner in the European parliament.

"This is about an unnecessary Europeanisation of sport. There is no need for this extra regulation. Some of the provisions border on the insane," a government official told the newspaper.

"An extra layer of bureaucracy at European level is totally unwarranted, as already recognised by the European Commission in their white paper," said Richard Scudamore, the chief executive of the Premier League.
