Everton back calls for redistribution of wealth

Everton have backed Uefa's plans to redistribute wealth across Europe's football clubs.

The Merseyside club want prize money won from playing in European competition to be distributed evenly to prevent the top clubs in the Champions League continually winning more than those in the Uefa Cup.

Manchester United won £33.9 million in prize money for lifting the Champions League this season, while Everton took home just £400,000 for reaching the last 16 of the Uefa Cup.

Keith Wyness, Everton's chief executive, believes some clubs will never be able to compete with the likes of United if the current financial situation remains the same.

He told the club's official website that gaps in the domestic leagues will become wider if Uefa does not change the system.

Uefa is attempting to persuade English teams to take a lesser proportion of the Champions League pay-pot, something that could help to bridge the gap.

"We certainly believe we are moving in the right direction following the progress the team has made over the last few seasons and are now calling on the football authorities in Europe to aid us in our bid," said Mr Wyness.
