Motherwell will honour their late captain Phil O'Donnell by naming a stand of their ground, Fir Park, after the midfielder in a home match against Villarreal on August 2nd.

The main stand of the club's stadium will be named after O'Donnell before the kick-off, with half the money raised from the match going to an educational trust for his four children.

He collapsed of heart failure during a match against Dundee United on December 29th and the club have already honoured him through a sell-out charity game at Celtic Park in May.

Motherwell chairman John Boyle said he was delighted to announce the match.

"We are very pleased that Villarreal, who are an outstanding European team and a great club, accepted our invitation to play at Fir Park in this pre-season match.

"We hope our fans will turn out in their thousands again to salute Phil and to see us play against superb opposition," he added.

O'Donnell's brother James described it as a "great honour" and said his family "appreciated deeply" all the support from the club.
