'Perfect' Portsmouth stadium close to receiving green light

FA Cup winners Portsmouth have revealed that work could begin on their new stadium as early as next year.

The stadium, designed by the same firm as that which was responsible for Beijing's Olympic stadium, will be positioned on an ex-landfill site by the junction between the M25 and M275 roads, and will look over Portsmouth harbour.

"We only have one word to describe this stadium - perfection," said Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie recently.

"The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of facilities and amenities, as well as an excellent viewing experience.

"Portsmouth Football Club has moved into a new era with the backing of owner Alexandre Gaydamak and these are very exciting times for the club, both on and off the field."

As well as a football ground the park will also house a training area for the Navy, and leisure facilities for the public.

Previously, the football club had to move the proposed stadium from the waterfront because the Ministry of Defense said it needed all the land near to the Naval dockyards.

"I think the plans for the new stadium and arena are very exciting, and the stadium in that location would look stunning," said David Williams, chief executive of Portsmouth City Council.

"Whilst it will be for the planning committee to determine the application, the city council will continue to do its utmost to help the club produce a workable and acceptable scheme to achieve a fitting new stadium for the FA Cup holders."
