Sales in Dutch supermarkets climbed a massive 8.4 per cent in the days between June 2 and 9, it has been reported.
Researcher GfK has found that, when compared to the same period last year, sales in Holland's supermarkets rose significantly due to the popularity of the Euro 2008 championships.
The figures come as a reminder of the financial power of the games, which regularly signals a big increase in spending across several industries.
Having already benefited from a revenue boost which took the supermarkets up to 593 million for the week, researchers believe that if Holland reach the final the industry could see another 45 million head its way.
"If the Netherlands make it to the final, we estimate supermarkets will benefit to the tune of about 45 million in extra sales," Thomson Financial reports.
The news comes as a Times report comments on the sizeable increase in sales in England during the 2006 World Cup.
"Two years ago the World Cup in Germany helped Tesco to sell more than half a million St George's flags, 400,000 footballs and 50,000 two-pint glasses in the shape of the tournament's trophy," the newspaper states.
