Despite the lack of viewings coming from the UK, Uefa has announced it is impressed by the viewing figures for the first eight matches of this year's Euro championships.

The highest viewing figures came from Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Austria.

More than 80 per cent of viewers watched the opening match in Portugal, hitting 2.6 million viewers, while the Switzerland - Czech Republic match drew two million viewers from Switzerland.

"We cannot expect to have 25 million British TV viewers for our games," said Uefa spokesman William Gaillard.

"It is obvious that had England been in the competition we would have got more viewers. The figures in Germany are stunning and the figures for the Netherlands-Italy game in Holland are probably an all-time high for Dutch television."

The news comes as Uefa announced record revenues for this year's championships, after cracking down on non-official advertisers and announcing plans to tighten television rights in the UK.

It has been reported that even neutral matches have drawn massive audiences, such as the Netherlands - Italy match which drew almost 15 million viewers in Germany alone.
