Football fans fed up with price of season tickets

The rising cost of watching Premiership matches is causing an increasing number of football fans to abandon their season tickets, figures show.

A new survey by The Football Fans Census for Virgin Money has revealed that one in seven football match goers will not renew their season tickets this year because they feel that they are being priced out of the game.

Manchester United supporters are the most aggrieved at the price hikes, with one in five refusing to buy a new season ticket at the cost of up to £912.

A quarter of West Ham followers will not be buying new season tickets this year, which will rise by four per cent next season to £885, while fans of FA Cup winners Portsmouth now face tickets costing up to £925.

The survey of 3,500 football fans was conducted by The Football Fans Census and also showed that overall, top-flight matches have risen in cost by an average of 12.5 per cent.

"The huge amount of money pouring into the Premier League means there is absolutely no justification for any price rises at all at the top of the game," commented Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters Federation.
