Gretna's days numbered as takeover falls through

Football Clubs News

Gretna's administrators cannot guarantee the club will be able to complete its league fixtures next year, it has been revealed.

It had been hoped that a consortium headed by Paul Davis would come to Gretna's rescue, but the decision of the Scottish Football League to demote Gretna to the Irn-Bru Third Division last Thursday rendered the group's business plan unworkable.

As a result, the consortium pulled out of negotiations - and David Elliot from Gretna's administrators Wilson Field has admitted that in its current state the club will not be able to play in matches next year and is no longer viable as a business.

As a result, he is now looking to sell the club's ground - Raydale Park - to someone "outside football", the BBC reports.

However, Gretna chairman Ron MacGregor remains hopeful that Gretna could still be saved.

"We are working under the administrator and we just hope he can hang on for someone to very quickly come in and take it on," he told the Scotsman.

Gretna's problems stem from the fact that they are essentially a local village team steered to success by a wealthy benefactor, Brooks Mileson, who withdrew his support due to ill health.
