A BBC study has shown the average cost of a mid-price season ticket at Premier League football clubs has reached £590, an increase of 7.2 per cent and twice the rate of consumer price inflation.

Increases varied between clubs with Portsmouth lumping another 17.5 per cent onto their prices after a successful season while Premier League runners-up Chelsea make no change at all.

Clubs' reasoning behind the increases differed too with Sunderland citing the fact that they froze their prices last year and Spurs citing their ambitions to progress.

A statement from Tottenham said: "In order to progress both on and off the pitch, we need to be able to continue to raise our level of investment in the squad and all areas of the club's operations and facilities."

The study compared middle-priced tickets for the 2007/08 season to the coming 2008/09 seasons.
Bolton, Liverpool and Newcastle are yet to reveal their prices but fans should expect increases if the clubs follow the trend.
