German tyre manufacture Continental has confirmed that it is to be one of the sponsors associated with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, just as it was in 2006 in Germany.
The agreement was announced yesterday (20th May 2008) by Sepp Blatter at a symbolic signing ceremony held at Fifa HQ in Zurich.
Continental will also sponsor the 2009 Confederations Cup and has an option to extend the contract when the World Cup goes outside Europe for a second consecutive time in Brazil in 2014.
Danny Jordan, CEO of the 2010 local organising committee, said: "We are delighted that another global company has put its trust in South Africa's ability to organise the 2010 World Cup and will be helping us to build on the passion and excitement we feel at hosting the world's premier football tournament."
Continental is no stranger to South Africa, having a tyre production plant in the Fifa World Cup venue Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, where 1,600 employees produced 2.6 million tyres in 2007.
The 1995 Rugby World Cup was a big success when it was held in South Africa and there was much surprise when the nation lost out to Germany with a bid to host the 2006 World Cup.
