Resignations pave way for Lowe return

Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde are poised to return to Southampton following the resignation of Leon Crouch, Patrick Trant and Keith Wiseman.

The trio's exit also means there is no need for the extraordinary general meeting which had been scheduled for Friday.

Both Lowe and Wilde are former chairmen, and they hold 46 per cent of the shares in the Saints' holding company Southampton Leisure Holdings plc between them.

They are expected to implement a cost-cutting strategy as part of an attempt to ensure the club does not fall into administration.

However, a statement issued by Wiseman on behalf of himself, Crouch and Trant suggests Lowe and Wilde may not have the necessary financial clout to turn Southampton's fortunes around.

"As far as we are aware neither Rupert Lowe nor Michael Wilde have financial resources that can be used to benefit the club and we are well aware that the vast proportion of the shareholding they can at present command is in the hands of a very few close friends and does not in any way reflect the views of most of the fans of the club," the statement said, the Southern Daily Record reports.

Chief executive Lee Hoos has also quit the club ahead of the impending takeover.
