Premier League 'not boring' says Scudamore

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has rejected a claim that the Premier League could become dull if there are always only four teams to contest the title.

The suggestion that the top of the division could become a closed shop - involving Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United - came from Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan whose side was the last team outside the top four to seriously challenge for the title.

But Scudamore, who was thought to be behind the idea for Premier League teams to play a 39th game overseas each season, said: "I don't think anyone in their right mind seriously thinks it is boring."

Pointing out that the Magpies' boss had made his comments about a two-tier top league after his side had just lost 2-0 to Chelsea, he said: "Kevin had just come off the pitch and was probably thinking about 'how do I get to that level over the summer'. It was just after the heat of the battle.

"Why is it [the Premier League] the most watched? The numbers tell you it is the most exciting league in the world."
